France has colonized the South Pacific islands of Kanaky-New Caledonia for 172 years, but few know about this chapter of French Empire that continues today. As pro-independence protests erupted across the islands last year, France arrested Kanak leader Christian Tein and flew him 17,000 km away from home where he was jailed for over a year without trial.
