Minnesota Democratic Rep. Melissa Hortman, fatally shot in a targeted attack, recently made headlines as the only House Democratic vote to repeal healthcare for illegal immigrants

State Rep. Melissa Hortman, the House’s Democratic leader and former speaker, was shot to death early Saturday.

Governor Tim Walz signed into law on Saturday the remaining bills that make up Minnesota’s two-year state budget.

Budget delays have been common across the country amid lousy economic forecasts, federal uncertainty and other factors.

Adults living in the U.S. illegally will be excluded from a state-run health care program under a budget deal that the Minnesota Legislature convened to pass in a special session Monday.

Minnesotans shouldn’t be too surprised when the budget cuts being made at the capitols in St. Paul and Washington, D.C., result in increases on their property tax bills. County and city leaders face an uncertain long-term budget outlook and will soon need to make tough choices about how much to raise taxes or what services to cut.
