In Minneapolis this summer, Democratic activists held a raucous convention to decide who should get the local party’s endorsements in the upcoming city election, a chaotic process that eventually saw the mayoral endorsement nullified by the state DFL.

Sen. Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope, will retire when her current term ends in 2027 after serving over 40 years in the Minnesota Legislature, having won election to the House the same year the late Walter Mondale lost 49 states to President Ronald Reagan.

The moment is bittersweet and was emotional for Democrats who are still mourning Hortman, their longtime and beloved leader who was assassinated in her home along with her husband Mark in June. State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were also shot and wounded.

Minnesota lawmakers met on Monday to discuss efforts to combat gun violence in the wake of recent gun violence, including the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School last month.

The local chapter said Friday it has filed an appeal with the DFL State Executive Committee, saying the state party's Constitution, Rules, and Bylaws Committee's "conduct and its decision are deeply flawed.

The Minneapolis DFL is appealing the decision to revoke Sen. Omar Fateh's endorsement for mayor of the city. In August, the Minnesota DFL's Constitution, Rules, and Bylaws Committee (CRBC) stripped Fateh of his endorsement after incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey challenged it multiple times.

The committee will discuss the impacts of the budget bill passed by Congress, as well as policies of President Donald Trump.

Two candidates that could become the House DFL leader are Rep. Jamie Long of Minneapolis and Rep. Zack Stephenson of Coon Rapids, a former DFL House majority leader.
