Singapore's opposition leader Pritam Singh has been found guilty of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee. A court imposed the maximum fine of S$7,000 ($5,223; £4,148) for each of two charges. Singh said that he would appeal against the conviction and sentence.

Pritam Singh, a member of Parliament and the head of the main opposition party, the Worker’s Party, was convicted on two counts of lying to a parliamentary committee under oath and was fined 7,000 Singaporean dollars, about $5,220, for each count. He plans to appeal.

O n February 17th Pritam Singh, the leader of Singapore’s opposition, was convicted of “wilfully” lying twice to a privileges committee in 2021 and hit with the maximum fine of S$7,000 ($5,200) on each charge. The verdict caps one in a spate of scandals in the city-state’s usually dull politics.
