Donovan Mitchell, Cavs and Thunder
With another marquee matchup against the Thunder on Thursday night as a measuring stick, will the Cavs star seize his championship this season?
Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers have been one of the most dominant teams in the NBA this season, owning a six-game lead in the Eastern Conference over the Boston Celtics.
Mitchell has taken on a slightly different role this season, willingly taking a step back to purposely elevate and empower his younger teammates — Darius Garland and Evan Mobley.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 20-point loss at Oklahoma City on Thursday that left the teams tied for the best record in the NBA at 34-6. Cleveland trailed by as many as 42 points in the game and G Donovan Mitchell had a season-low eight points.
Donovan Mitchell scored 27 of his game-high 35 points in the first half, helping the Cleveland Cavaliers to defeat the Indiana Pacers 127-117 in Indianapolis on Tuesday.
Oklahoma City’s full on obliteration of the league-best Cleveland Cavaliers was surprising to say the least. Without its two top options in the front court, the
Mitchell provided a season-low eight points (3-15 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), two rebounds, two assists and one steal across 21 minutes during Thursday's 134-114 loss to the Thunder.
According to Cavaliers sideline reporter Serena Winters, the young fans who received the seating upgrade formed a connection with Mitchell back in his Utah Jazz days. Seven years ago, the fans saw Mitchell at a Utah barbershop and have followed the All-Star guard since. Mitchell responded to the story on social media after Cleveland’s 134-122 win.
The Cavs have the best offense in the NBA, but Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell struggle against bigger, more physical players.
Recent reports indicate that the Cleveland Cavaliers are targeting an NBA star to improve their starting five ahead of the trade deadline.
“Executives from three franchises told The Athletic that Cleveland has expressed interest in acquiring 6-foot-8 forward Cam Johnson from the Brooklyn Nets — one of the most coveted players league-wide in the trade market — with the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline fast approaching,” The Athletic’s Joe Vardon wrote Friday morning.
