Aaron Rodgers’ tenure with the New York Jets began with lots of fanfare and Super Bowl aspirations. It ended less than two years later with a disappointing thud.

The Jets slammed the door on the 41-year-old quarterback potentially returning to the team when new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey issued a joint statement Thursday saying they told Rodgers last week “that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback.”

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields could be a Jet. The 25-year-old is one of the top options heading to the open market, after serving his rookie deal that was worth $18 million. The Jets have a couple of weapons who are familiar with Fields, as Garrett Wilson and Jeremy Ruckert flanked Fields at Ohio State.

Rodgers' presence could help make good on the offseason spending spree the Titans went on a year ago in which they brought in wide receiver Calvin Ridley, running back Tony Pollard, center Lloyd Cushenberry and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed. In an AFC South that is one of the softer divisions in the NFL, Rodgers could still thrive.

It’s official: quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not return to the New York Jets. Despite an up-and-down 2024 season, Rodgers should see plenty of interest from around the league from QB-needy teams looking for a stopgap at the position.
