TOKYO — A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has hit southwestern Japan, the country’s Meteorological Agency said Monday, while warning the public to stay away from coastal areas because of a tsunami threat.
The tremors struck at 9.19 pm local time, was centered near Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The meteorological agency has also warned of possible waves up to one metre.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued the advisory for tsunami waves of up to one metre (three feet) after the quake off Miyazaki prefecture in the Kyushu region around 21:19 p.m. (1219 GMT).
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck southwestern Japan, prompting tsunami warnings for Miyazaki and Kochi Prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the quake was centered off the island of Kyushu.
