Thousands of flights have been canceled, including more than 400 out of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport – the nation’s busiest airport – where a ground delay has been issued.
ATLANTA — The stage is set. On Monday, Notre Dame and Ohio State will play for the 2025 College Football National Championship. North Carolina is well represented on Notre Dame's sideline with graduate kicker Mitch Jeter, a Salisbury native, and Sam Pendleton, a Reagan High school alum.
School was canceled for millions of children across a wide tract of southern states from Texas to Georgia and as far east as South Carolina.
Freezing rain will lead to icy conditions, with a tenth up to a third inch of ice expected. The best chance for significant icing will occur across north Georgia, the Midlands of South Carolina up toward the Piedmont of North Carolina.
“Significant accumulations of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will lead to hazardous travel conditions and the potential for power outages,” the NWS warns. In North Georgia, up to 6 inches of snow is possible with even more in higher elevations. Closer to the city, as much as 3 inches is expected.
Andy Atkins, co-owner of the Bad Luck Burger Club food truck in east Nashville, brushed off picnic tables with a broom and shoveled snow off the sidewalk in front of his business. He closed the truck on Friday but hoped that customers would show up on Saturday.
Power is back in parts of North Carolina and South Carolina where tens of thousands of customers lost electricity over the last few days.
The Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, in effect from 5 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. It covers all of North Georgia from the Tennessee and North Carolina lines, south through metro Atlanta into Griffin and as far southwest as Heard County and southeast as Lincoln County.
