Tableau, which Gartner describes as a self-contained BI platform with data mashup capabilities and direct data connectors, is one way to move when you are hitting the limits with Excel.

Tableau is not pitched as a direct replacement for Excel: it is more expensive and its licensing model is not designed to put a copy of the software on the desktop of every employee.
