The Detroit Lions signed second-year running back Jabari Small as depth and insurance behind David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
As a team, the Lions ranked No. 3 in the NFL in rushing touchdowns (32) and No. 6 in the NFL in rushing yards (2,488) in 2024. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs tied Baltimore's Derrick Henry and Buffalo's James Cook for most rushing touchdowns (16) in 2024, putting up 1,412 rushing yards on 250 carries.
Small effectively replaces Anthony Tyus on the Lions roster. The Lions waived Tyus, an undrafted rookie from Ohio, with a non-football illness designation on Thursday. The newcomer will compete with Tye Bobichaux for reps behind the Lions' established backfield foursome of Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki.
The Detroit Lions have added running back Jabari Small and two cornerbacks to their roster before the start of their 2025 NFL training camp.
The Detroit Lions have filled out their roster ahead of the start of training camp, signing running back Jabari Small, and cornerbacks DiCaprio Bootle and Tyson Russell, the team announced Friday.
Small spent the 2024 season with the Titans' practice squad after joining the team as an undrafted free agent. He'll battle for a roster spot during training camp but will likely face a tough path with the likes of Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki already serving as depth for Detroit at running back.
