SEATTLE, WA – The city of Seattle has agreed to pay $29 million to settle a wrongful death claim brought by the family of Jaahnavi Kandula, the 23 year old graduate student from India who was killed by a speeding police officer in 2023.
A Seattle police officer shot a person in Ballard on Thursday evening, spokesperson Detective Eric Muñoz said. The shooting was near Northwest 62nd Street and 28th Avenue Northwest, the department said on X. It was not immediately clear if more than one officer fired shots or what led to the shooting.
It was a city-wide effort to efficiently clean up the aftermath of the Seahawks' enormous turnout for their Super Bowl parade in downtown Seattle.
The fourth-seeded Seattle Prep Panthers (14-8) face their toughest test of the postseason tonight when they travel to South Seattle to take on top-seeded and nationally-ranked Rainier Beach (20-1) in a Metro League 3A boys basketball championship tournament semifinal.
The officer was traveling 74 miles per hour in a 25-m.p.h. zone when he hit Jaahnavi Kandula in a crosswalk while responding to a call.
