Pepperdine University's longstanding wildfire protocol urges students to shelter in place in two buildings instead of evacuating.

Pepperdine University officials said the campus was designed in the 1960s with fire safety in mind due to the region's experience with wildfires.

About 3,000 people sheltered on the university’s campus in Malibu, Calif., overnight on Monday. Some of them watched the flames through the windows of a library.
