The Dow and S&P 500 look to notch a sixth day of gains as investors await more trade news and an easing of tariffs on automakers expected to be announced by President Trump as his 100 days are marked this week.

A slower phase-in for tariffs on auto parts will give manufacturers time to ramp up manufacturing in the United States. Some warn they will still drive up car prices.

The stock market’s lackluster performance under Trump only ranks ahead of the starts of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s terms in 1933 and 1937, during the depths of the Great Depression. It also outstrips both Ford and the start of Nixon’s second term in 1973, when the U.S. confronted another economic crisis in the form of stagflation.
