WASHINGTON – House Republicans plan to enact work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks for Medicaid, according to a proposal released late on May 11 by a key GOP-led committee.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) warned during a recent interview that the proposed Republican cuts to Medicaid will end up causing “thousands and thousands” of low-income and working-class people’s deaths.

House Republicans are eyeing a vote on the final package before Memorial Day, even as they have yet to reach consensus on several key issues.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that Medicaid cuts would result in 7.6 million Americans losing coverage within 10 years.

The proposal, which is to be considered this week by a key House panel, omits some of the furthest-reaching reductions to the health program but would leave millions without coverage or facing higher costs.

But backers like Rep. Gabe Evans say the proposal’s goal is to ensure only those who qualify for the program are using it.
